new zealand based crate digger frank booker invites good friend julien dyne to drop the second release on his new imprint down in the basement. jd picks up where the man called booker left off on vol 1 and gets straight up to speed cutting up rare boogie, disco and afro jams and employing his trademark raw cuts in an old school style, while lacing oodles of fx n stuff into the mix. the overall sound is reminiscent of the early idjut boys material, which is so close to mr booker s heart.

solimano returns to his unlock recordings imprint with two mellow house cuts, featuring a pair of imaginative reinterpretations from fellow argentinean’s barem and deep mariano. originally established to promote latin american productions in 2004, unlock recordings has since hosted the likes of jorge savoretti and guti. its founder, gonzalo solimano, has proven himself time again as a label owner, dj and producer, working as a ‘mr. x’ at red bull academy for almost ten years when not performing at the likes of creamfields buenos aires, south american music conference and space world tour. ‘learjet’ is a low-slung groover complete with organic samples, bass guitar licks and a hypnotically looped vocal sample. up first on remix duties, minus regular barem subdues the raw textures of the original to generate an understated rendition, whereas get slow founder deep mariano takes it down a percussive route where an infectious rhythm is accompanied by dub inspired synths. finally, ‘calling again’ is a sensual deep house cut featuring the vocals of sophie taylor, known for her collaboration with mathias kaden, among many others.

ibiza based francisco allendes makes a welcome return to desolat for his next release, a fine ep that marks something of a new direction for the man across its four great tracks. first up, 2agility queen is a raw bit of jacking house with clipped vocals offered up by dance manias dj dmc, bulky drums and classic cow bell tinkles all making for a sweaty and heavy house kicker.

toronto hustles kick their ep off with the classic house sound of in your mind . mr fingers style bassline over chunky chords and a well chosen rasta vocal sample builds an infectious house groove. just enough is perfect terrace material and will keep those early morning deep house heads happy. the raw cut brings a tougher groove to the ep, reminiscent of that roper mid 90 s us house sound from chicago.

dutch producer frits wentink continues to flourish in the follow up to his debut lp rarely pure never simple that was released on wolf music back in march this year. throughout releases on heist and wolf, frits has consistently drawn for his arsenal of synths, effects and drum machines and through doing so has stitched a sound characterised by raw drums, analogue bass tones and odd, lo-fi samples.

anubis ep wants to bring back metaphorically that solid foundation of reality through music and feeling. the first track, anubis, like the egyptian god, provides a safe passage to another world through its dub chords, dark techno berlinish synths and hidden messages in the voices scatters on the whole track. the remix, made by canadian based artist hooll, has a more minimal and deep dub approach completing perfectly the other side of the journey. finally the last track, thoth, represents a mediating energy between dark and light with raw low ends and groovy percussions creating a wormhole like journey for the listener.

2015 repress , finale sessions presents a new series of releases from the vault on 10inch format. this first release pairs two bonafide legends in the shape of fred p and kai alce, both known for their incredibly accomplished takes on house. fred ps ram is a deep excursion into pulsing chords and delicate atmosphere, while kai alces >scene 1< is a raw, acidic affair for peak time sets - both are essential cuts.

more abstract, forward thinking house music courtesy of transatlantyk. mondo hehe is the fifth ep in a growing catalogue of the label and is one of its most adventurous offerings yet. lutto lento (real name lubomir grzelak) is an experimental musician from warsaw, poland, who specialises in dark, spooky, uneasy music that s hard to categorise. apart from running two experimental cassette only labels (sangoplasmo and dunno recordings), lutto lento records music for contemporary theatre and forward thinking european labels like ftd and where to now? he is equally inspired by avant-garde and surreal sounds from the bygone eras as well as raw house and techno music of today. his music tends to absorb the listener into a parallel, imaginary world, where sounds of a lamenting cry of a trumpet (b2) and a voice counting numbers on top of the rolling exotica style bongos (a2) are as important as jacking chicago house drums (b1) and energetic basslines (a3). from the jumping beats of the title track, to the late night deep roller casino , the * mondo hehe ep* is a superb collection of non-generic house music that sounds as good at a club, as it does at home.
